Zolushka recommended two movies, and one of them I found quite amazing as a citation, as it's an MGM film that I'd never heard of starring Viven Leigh.
It's called Waterloo Bridge, and it's the story of a girl who falls in love with a Captain (and young Lord) in the British army when they meet on Waterloo Bridge.
She's fired from her job as a ballerina over him.
He is falsely reported as dead.
She has to stoop to prostitution to keep body and soul together.
He returns to find her trolling for servicemen in the station (but thinks it's a coincidence).
He takes her home to mom, and uncle 'Duke'. They all love her.
Uncle Duke tells her that he's so happy, because the boy has finally found a fit wife, and it's important not to sully the tradition of 'the regiment'.
She tells 'mom' about her history, apologizes to mom, leaves forever, and kills herself by walking in front of an ambulance on Waterloo Bridge.
I think I like this girl. This is the first drama of manners I've found to be anything other than depressing.
