David Lazar is Sweden's heterosexual of the year

David Lazar was named Sweden's heterosexual of the year by the magazine QX. Long active in gay and lesbian issues, the American-born rabbi who leads Stockholm's main synagogue is one of a small number of Conservative rabbis to preside over gay commitment ceremonies, something he did even before the movement liberalized its stance towards homosexuality in 2006. His trailblazing has been recognized before: In Israel, Lazar received the Yakir Hakehila from the Tel Aviv gay community. "I could probably be in the Guiness Book of World Records," Lazar joked. "I'm the only rabbi with a gay award on two continents."
